Grogansworth Merino Stud is a family-run business between the towns of Yass and Boorowa in the south-east of the state of New South Wales, Australia.

With targeted classing and breeding a stable genetic base has been created which retains the large frame, wool cut and fertility from the Riverina background, combined with soft handling, white, water-resistant fine-medium wool of 19 microns.

The Grogansworth Merino stud is run in conjunction with a self-replacing commercial Merino flock of approximately 10,000 head.

ABOUT US

Grogansworth Merino Stud is a family business run by the principal, Kim Henderson, his wife Roxanna, and their son George and his wife, Alanna. Kim and Roxanna’s daughters, Jacqueline Henderson and Anna Fisher, and their son-in-law, Matthew Fisher also assist when they are at Grogansworth from time to time.

Since the foundation of the stud, Ian Marwedel has been the sheep classer at Grogansworth. His extensive experience within the industry ensures that we consistently produce sheep and wool of the highest quality.

BREEDING

Grogansworth Stud sheep are classed using visual assessment with the aid of wool tests. Selection of ewes and rams is based on the following:

Wool - Softness, brightness and cutting ability.

Skin - Loose, pliable and productive without excessive wrinkle.

Structure - Emphasis on a large frame that is structurally sound with good muscle.

Fertility - Maiden ewes that are scanned dry are given one chance. Adult ewes scanned dry are culled.

Stud ewes average a wool cut of 8kg of 19 to 19.5 micron wool. Fleece yields average 74-75% and have been as high as 81.8% in June 2012, giving a high clean fleece weight. The stud ewes wean 100% lambs to ewes joined.

In 2012 the Grogansworth commercial flock weaned 100% of lambs to ewes joined while the stud ewes weaned 106%. Ewe mortality was 2%.

All Grogansworth ewes, both stud and commercial, lamb unaided.
